Anterior shoulder instability : evaluation with dynamic ultrasonic scanning

Objective: This study was concerned with those patients with anterior shoulder instability and their evaluation with dynamic U/S scanning.

Materials & Methods: Eighteen patients (13 males and 5 females) were examined with different sonographic approaches to both shoulders.

The glenoid labrum, the anterior capsular complex as well as the integrity of the bony humeral head and the bony glenoid rim were evaluated on the normal and abnormal sides.

All patients underwent arthroscopy within one week from the ultrasound examination.

Results: Ultrasound proved to be highly accurate to depict glenoid labral tears, associated fractures and humeral head fractures.

In addition to its high accuracy, ultrasound performs a real time scanning with dynamic movements.

Conclusion: U/S being easy, inexpensive and an available method, it can be considered as the modality of choice in evaluation of those patients with anterior shoulder instability.
