After Independence Al-Azhar encouraged study of mcdicinc, engineering, mathematics and other subjects.
From the very beginning the rounds which were held in the Mosque, discus-sion was free and dealt with all kinds of human interest.
By the end of each course examina-lions were held and the successful candidates were offered licances or scholarships.
The teaching system now in all universities has its roots in the oldest university in the world - A1-Azhar.
Al-Azhar’$ role in the political life of the country can never be denied.
It always took the side of the people and the sacrifices of its Sheikhs and students are brilliant pages in the history of the country.
Because of this important role which attracted students from all parts of the world - east and west - the government has decided to renew and upgrade Al-Azhar, since it is the biggest and oldest university in the world.
Al-Azhar has become a garrison for Islam aiid strives to achieve the following objectives: 1.
?reserving the Islamic Heritage, explaining and publishing it.
2.
Fropagating the message of Islam to its real nature and its effect on humanity.
" the last quarter of this.؟entury witnessed a sharp rise in the number of faculties.
lr،stead of 3 faculties in the fifties, Al-Azhar University now has 42 faculties dispersed in all parts of the country from Alexandria to Aswan.
Al-Azhar development of human resources is not in the number of academic degrees it offers to candidates from all Muslim and non-Muslim countries in all branches but it includes the development of all aspects of life and spreading the message of Islam concerning the rights of man and equality in its largest meaning.
