Abstract EN

Pines ol the Halepensis group (Aleppo pine and brutia pine) cover more than 7 millions ha in Mediterranean low and middle elevation regions.

Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Mill.) extends on the western part of the Mediterranean basin and reaches its southern limit in Morocco.

Because ol'high human pressures (over exploitation and tires).

2 thirds of the Moroccan Aleppo pine area disappeared, This pioneer species, well adapted to semi-arid and sub-humid bioclimates is of main importance for low elevation afforestation for production or soil conservation purposes.

In order to choose natural provenances or new varieties well adapted to natural conditions and objectives of plantation, genetic variability of adaptive traits has to be studied.

Most of the provenances trials settled around 1970.

in Morocco, unfortunately disappeared.

So, a new multi-site provenance test involving many Moroccan provenances was initiated in 1990.

In order to estimate genetic parameters required for the C.N.R.F.

Aleppo pine breeding program, a progeny test could also be established.

Some stands located in specific natural conditions and endangered because of the lack of natural regeneration worth being protected.

Studies about estimation of genetic variability and breeding of Pinus brutia Ten.

would be fully justified in Morocco.

This species has a good wood production and could advantageously be used in natural conditions situated between Aleppo pine and maritime pine or black pine.

This program could offer the opportunity for international cooperation with Tunisia and France.
