Depressage des taillis d'Eucalyptus dans le Rharb et la foret de Mamora : resultats preliminaires

Coppice thinning experiments were carried out on Eucalyptus camaldulensis} E.

gomphocephala and E.

grandis second rotation stands in the south of the Rharb and in the Ma-mora forest (Morocco).

Factors discussed are : number of shoots to keep per stool, thinning age and spacing.

It was observed that the unthinned coppice always contains the greatest total volume per hectare.

There is no evidence that the thinning practice results in a greater merchantable volume.

If the treatment is intensive (reservation of 1 or 2 sprouts per stump), there is even a loss of saleable volume.

Particularly as concerns Eucalyptus grandis, at the age of six years, both total and saleable volume were the greatest in the unthinned coppice.

The spacing trial could not provide us with results, because the stands were too young.

It seems, however, that a spacing of 4 x 4 m combined with conservation of four sprouts per stool may be better than a spacing of 3 x 3 m and reservation of one sprout less.

It results from the experiments that only low thinning is recommended.

At least three sprouts per stump have to be reserved.

As to E.

grandis3 the keeping of about 800 shoots per hectare would be advisable.

As concerns the age for applying the treatment, three years after clear-cutting seems to be a suitable period.
