English Abstract

-The aim of the study was to determine the effectiveness of a training program based on Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring in developing the caring performance of registered nurses in Jordanian hospitals.

The study sought to answer the following questions: 1.

What are the criteria of caring performance based on Watson’s Theory of Human Caring? 2.

What is the level of caring performance based on Watson’s theory among female registered nurses in Jordanian hospitals? 3.

What are the components of the suggested program based on Jean Watson’s theory for developing the caring performance of female registered nurses? 4.

What is the effect of the suggested program based on Jean Watson’s theory in the caring performance of female registered nurses? The study consisted of two parts and applied two research designs: descriptive design was applied in the first part, and pre-experimental design (one group with pre-test and post-test) was applied in the second part.

The population of the study was the female registered nurses (estimated at 400) working at the four hospitals of King Hussein Medical Center.

The researcher selected a stratified proportional random sample from the study population in these hospitals.

The sample represented (15%) of the total population, i.e.

(60) female registered nurses participated in the first part of the study.

The participants in the second part of the study were (31) female registered nurses among the aforementioned (60) nurses who agreed to join the training program and who scored average or below in the level of caring performance based on Watson’s Theory of Human Caring.

For the purposes of data collection, the researcher used an observation checklist modified from a previously developed tool, the Caring Behaviors Assessment Tool (CBA), prepared by Cronin and Harrison during 1988.

The instrument was based on the Ten Carative Factors of Watson’s Human Caring Theory (1988).

Permission was granted by the authors.

The observation checklist was examined by a jury of experienced PhD holders in nursing and in education.

To analyze the data drawn from the first part of the study, which was the observation phase, the means and standard deviations were computed to determine the level of caring performance for the (60) participants based on Watson’s theory.

As for the second part of the study, the pre-experimental phase concerned with determining the effect of the training program on caring performance, a T-test was carried out to compare the means and standard deviations on the pre-test and post-test checklist observation results for the (31) participants who agreed to participate in the program.

The observational study showed that the level of caring performance of the registered nurses in the study sample before applying the training program was (72.58%) within the average level, (17.74%) within the low level, and (9.67%) within the high level.

The pre-experimental (pre-test and post-test) results showed that there are significant statistical differences in the computed means, which could be related to the caring training program.

In light of the findings of this study the researcher recommends: 1.

Reviewing the nursing curricula in colleges of nursing in Jordan and promoting the caring concept as a unique value in nursing.

2.

Since the training program proved to be effective in developing the caring performance of the registered nurses: a.

Adopting the training program by nursing authorities ( such as the Nurses’ Council in Jordan and the Jordanian Nursing Council) for developing the caring performance of all nursing personnel working in the clinical area through continuing education and in-service training programs b.

Making use of the established checklist since its effectiveness in measuring the caring performance of nurses was demonstrated.

3.

Conducting further research on developing caring performance in the health field, to include male and female nurses employed at primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare facilities.
