Abstract EN

In an attempt to elucidate the role of some metabolic aspects in the induction and pathogenesis of chondrocalcinosis, 26 patients suffering chondrocalcinosis were taken for the study.

Diagnosis was based on the criteria of McCarty.

Patients group comprised 16 females and 10 males their ages rangedfrom 47-67 years with a mean of 56.0 SD+/-6.08.

The control group comprised 10 Patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis, their age and sex were matched with that of the chondrocalcinosis group.

Their serum levels of TSH, T3, T4, calcium , phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase enzyme were measured.

T3 serum level in patients group ranged from 88-180 ng/dl, while in the control group it ranged from 92-160 ng/dl.

T4 in the patients group rangedfrom 4.5-9.5 ug/dl, while in the control group it ranged from 4.2-9.1 ug/dl.The range of TSH in the patients group was 0.8 - 3.1 uIU/mi and in the control group it rcmgedfrom 1.0-3.0 uIU /ml .

Serum level of calcium in the patients group ranged from 7.5-10.0 mg % with a mean of 8.33 + 0.69 and in the control group it ranged from 8.0-10.0 mg %.

Phosphorus serum level in the patients group ranged from 2.6-4.2 mg % with a mean of 3.38+/-0.46, while in the control group it rangedfrom 2.5-4.2 mg % with a mean of 3.21+/-0.51.In the patients group the level of alkaline phusphutase enzyme rangedfrom 14-44IU/L with a mean of 25.3W-7.5 while in the control group it ranged from 13-39 IU /L with a mean of 25.2+Z-8.4.

From the above results it could be concluded that there is a lack of association between thyroid status , calcium ,phosphorus or alkaline phosphatase enzyme and chondrocalcinosis or osteoarthritis.
