Developmental training program for children with cerebral palsy

Abstract EN

Objective: To assess the effect of early intervention stimulation program and parental involvement in rehabilitation of infants and young children with cerebral palsy (CP) .

Materials and methods: Forty children with CP with mean age 13.8 + 6.54 months were divided randomly into two groups .

They were assigned to receive either 12 months of physical therapy ( group I) or 12 months of physical therapy together with an assessment based infant stimulation program (group II) .

A developmental assessment was done to each child at basal condition and after 6 and 12 months of treatment .The developmental assessment includes 6 scales , namely perceptual /fine motor, cognition , language, social / emotional, self care and gross motor.

A developmental quotient (DO) was calculated to each child on each of the 6 profile scales.

The mean initial DO for both groups were compared to the mean DO calculated on retest given at 6 and 12 months .

Results: Patients of both groups were comparable regarding age , sex, type of CP and DQ of all assessed variables.

There was no significant difference in DQ of all assessed variables at 0 and 6 months of treatment in group I except for gross motor area, but after 12 months of treatment there
