English Abstract

-This study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of an instructional program in enhancing the Baccalaureate nursing students’ readiness for self-directed learning in the clinical context at two public universities. Specifically, this study aimed at answering the following questions: 1- What is the level of readiness for self- directed clinical learning of nursing students of the baccalaureate nursing programs in general, and specific to its’ domains? 2- Are there any significant differences in the students SDCLRS attributed to gender, and the students’ level of study? 3- What is the effect of the proposed program in enhancing baccalaureate nursing students’ readiness for self- directed learning in the clinical context? The study employed two research designs: the descriptive and the experimental design.

The sample of the descriptive study consisted of 179 students from the third and fourth year levels of the baccalaureate nursing programs of two public universities participated in the study.

The sample of the experimental design consisted of (36) students selected from one public university, were randomly and equally distributed into experimental group and a control group.

Subjects of the experimental group were trained using the proposed program to enhance their readiness for self-directed clinical learning, and the control group was trained using the traditional method of training. To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher developed the research instrument: the SDCLRS to collect data.

The questionnaire elicited demographic data, and solicited information about the students SDCLR.

The (SDCLRS) was tested for validity and reliability.

A proposed program was developed to enhance the students’ readiness for self- directed clinical learning.

The program is composed of five phases: orientation, planning, implementation, reflection, and evaluation.

Results revealed that there were significant differences in SDCLRS scores of the students attributed to gender and level of study.

In addition, results indicated a significant statistical differences at (ά = 0.05) in means between the experimental group and the control group in favor of the experimental group who was exposed to the proposed program designed for enhancing the students’ readiness for self-directed clinical learning. In light of these findings, the study recommended that the proposed program to be adopted and the students’ level of readiness for self-directed clinical learning be assessed before the initiation of teaching of clinical nursing courses.
