Bone mineral density changes after stroke

This study was done on 28 hemiplegic patients.

They were divided into z groups; group I include 14 patients having stroke of less than 4 months duration, group II include 14 patients having stroke of more than 4 months duration; group III include 10 patients from group I who underwent excercise sessions for 3 months on a rate of 3 sessions/week.

Bone mineral density of affected and healthy sides was measured by single photon absoiptiometry in the first, second and third group of patients and correlated with duration of hemiplegia and various clinical data.

We found that bone mineral density in the affected upper limb and lower limb was significantly lower than the bone mineral density in the healthy upper limb and lower limb (P<0.05).

In the third group of patients the bone mineral density in the affected upper limb was increased after the exercise but the increase was of no statistical significance.

On the other side, the increase in bone mineral density in the affected lower limb after exercise was of statistical significance.

We also found that bone mineral density correlated inversely with the duration of hemiparesis.
