Abstract EN

Objective : To study the clinical pro file of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections requiring hospitalization in bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) infants < 12 months of age at Hamad Medical Corporation in the State of Qatar to provide a rational basis for deciding appropriate prophylaxis against RSV infection.

Method : Retrospective review study.

Results : Data were obtained from 21 infants with BPD < 12 months.

Ten cases (47.6 %) were singletons and 11 cases (52.4 %) were multiple-birth infants.

There were significant large family sizes that probably at increased risk of acquired RSV infection.

There was significant morbidity, with length of stays > 7 days in 19 of 21 cases.

Only one infant required mechanical ventilation.

None died.

Conclusion : BPD with RSV constitutes a considerable burden to the pediatric health care system and therefore prophylaxis against RSV is desirable.
