Metalloproteinase-1 tissue inhibitor mmp-1 complex (mmp-1 timp-1)‎ and etalloproteinase-3 serum levels in osteoarthritis

Aim of Work: Serum levels of metalloproteinase-1 Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinase-1Complex (MMP-1/ TIMMP-1) and metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) were determined in the sera of OA patients and compared with corresponding control levels, with the idea to find out their role in this disease.

Materials & Methods: The study included 30 OA patients and 29 controls that were age matched.

The Lequesne index was determined for patients as well as X-ray grading of the joints.

The serum levels of MMP-1/TIMMP-1 complex and MMP-3 were measured in all subjects.

Results: MMP-1/TIMMP-1 complex and MMP-3 were found to be higher in patients as compared to controls, but the difference was significant only in case of MMP-3.

Both MMP-1/TIMMP-1 complex and MMP-3 reflected disease activity, as with Lequesne index <8 compared with cases with Lequesne index> 8, but the difference was significant only in case of MMP-3.

Moreover, MMP-3 serum levels were significantly higher in patients with x-ray grades III & IV compared with grades I & II.

Significant positive correlations were observed between MMP-3 and Lequesne index, ESR-1st and 2nd hours.

Conclusion: The present findings further support the role of metalloproteinases especially MMP-3 in cartilage destruction in OA patients and following disease progression.
