Five of tlie وق patients (17 %) developed new onset diabetes mellitus related lo )))■()tease inhibitors.
All five patients were Qataris and three ofthein (60 %) Itad a family history ofdiabetes.
Diabetes mellitus developed after a )neon of 20 months ofprotease inhibitor treatment.
Other metabolic disorders such as hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia, and lipodys-trophy were common occurring in 80 %, 40 %, and 60 % of patients respective[}'.
We conclude that Qatari patients infected with HIV seen) to be ،،ء a greater risk of (level*)))-ingprotease inhibitor related diabetes and have longer time to develop diabetes when compared with patientsfrom other regions.
Therapy ofprotease inhibitor related diabetes mellitus should follow same lines of treatment of type 2 diabetes in non-HIV infected patients.
