Abstract AR
Abstract EN
Objective: To find out whether MIA might be a serum marker for cartilage and joint destruction and degradation in osteoarthritis (OA) & systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
Methods: MIA serum concentrations of 20 OA patients and 20 SLE patients were measured and compared to 10 healthy subjects.
MIA concentrations were then studied for any association with joint destruction or any correlation with inflammatory parameters.
Results: Significantly increased MIA serum concen-trations were found in destructive joint disease as OA when compared to non-destructive joint disease as SLE.
A significant correlation was also found between enhanced levels of MIA and inflammatory parameters as ESR in both OA and SLE groups.
Conclusion: The presence of elevated levels of MIA in the serum very likely reflects chondrocytes activation in conjugation with joint destruction.
So, MIA can be used as a novel, early predictable, easily quantifiable serum marker of joint-destructive diseases.
