A study was made ٠« 168 patients (92 men and 76 women) to determine the frequency and clinical charac-teristics of major post-stroke depression (PSD) 3-4 months after the occurrence ofafirst-ever stroke.
Allpatients un-derwent comprehensive psychiatric, /!('!(/»logical and ٢،،-diological examinations.
The diagnosis ofmajor PSD was based on criteria ofthe Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM IV).
The prevalence ofmajor PSD at three months was about (25%) and was signifi-cantly more common amongst women (15%) than men (9.5%), p =0.0162, and significantly more com/no/! amongst patients will! left-sided stroke (19.6%) than right-sided stroke (5.4%) p=().()237.
These findings demonstrate the importance of lesion location when diagnosing PSI).
