Abstract EN

A triphasic combined oral contraceptive, containing 30-40-30 ug ethinyl estradiol (EE) and 50-75-125 ug Levonorgestrel (LNg), was compared with a fixed low dose combination, containing 30 ug EE and 150 ug LNg, and high dose combination containing 50 ug EE and 500 ug dL-norgestrel.

Serum lipids were determined in 30 women in each group prior to the study and at cycles 6 and 12 of pill taking.

The 3 drugs caused insignificant increase in total serum cholesterol and phospholipids.

High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol) was only significantly reduced by the low dose 30/150 and high dose 50/500 drugs.

The 2 drugs had the same effect on HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol ratio.

The 50/500 and triphasic drugs significantly increased serum triglycerides.
