Arabic Abstract

These days the employers of engineering graduates seek engineers who are well rounded and prepared to take the challenges of the impact of engineering technologies on human life in a professional manner.

Therefore, after initial assessment of the applicants, the employers assess the professional skills of engineering graduates when they interview them.

The industry gives a great importance to the education of engineering standards and professional ethics in preparing graduates to contribute constructively toward the society and humanity keeping in mind the welfare and safety of the public.

The professional skills that employers seek are integrated in the (d) and (f) through (j) ABET EC2000 Student Outcomes [1].

Out of these student’s Professional Outcomes, (f) and (h) relates to Professional Ethics and Engineering Standards.

It is very exigent to teach and assess these two outcomes.

Many pedagogical trends and curriculum models of teaching professional Engineering Ethics have been proposed in literature and implemented at various institutions [2].

In recognizing the important role standards play within the engineering, technology and computing fields, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) supports and encourages the education of engineering standards and professional ethics and provides guidelines toward this goal [3], [4].

In this paper we present how to teach and assess these two important aspects of engineering education as a part of a Special Topics Course offered in the Electrical Engineering Department.

This part of the course includes; the Importance of Engineering Standards, introduction and explanation of IEEE Code of Ethics, introduction of a particular electrical engineering standard, and mapping of IEEE code of ethics to National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) fundamental cannons and correlation to Islamic belief system of the students.

The effects of teaching engineering standards and professional ethics on other professional outcomes’ enhancement are also discussed.

We will share some results of the assessment.

The student outcomes assessment entails recognition of engineering standards’ importance and comprehension of professional engineering ethics’ sensitivity.

Finally we explore the challenges of teaching engineering standards and professional ethics.
