English Abstract

The study of the Structure-Performance Relationship in banking markets helps us in understanding the microeconomic determinants of commercial banks' profits and performance.

How a bank performs and how a bank behaves can be reflected by the structure of the market within which that specific bank operates.

This research concentrates on the two Structure-Performance Hypotheses (The Efficient Structure Performance Hypothesis and the Structure Conduct Performance Hypothesis (Traditional Hypothesis); in order to explain the relationship between concentration and Banks' performance.

The aim of this study is, to empirically test the structure performance hypothesis within the institutional context of the Jordanian commercial banking system.

More specifically, the study will investigate the role of market concentration in determining bank profitability and performance.

To reach this objective, a bank profitability model was formulated under the methodological guidelines of the existing studies in the empirical literature, by regressing a measure of bank profitability on a measure of market concentration, plus other control variables.

I Our findings indicate clearly that, the traditional hypothesis does not hold in the case of the Jordanian local commercial banking market while there is some support for the efficient hypothesis.

Recommendations can be summarized into; fewer regulations and fewer restrictions on the banking market to be able to intensify the positive market share effect on profitability.

Raising the market share of small sized banks, working towards achieving superior management or production techniques and technologies
