English Abstract
This study aimed at measuring the effect of an Internet-based instructional program (IBIP) on developing Salman bin Abdulaziz University students’ writing and critical thinking skills in Saudi Arabia.
This study tried to answer the following questions: 1.
What are the components of the Internet-based instructional program (IBIP) designed to teach English major students at Salman bin Abdulaziz University? 2.
What is the effect of the Internet-based instructional program on developing English major students’ writing skills at Salman bin Abdulaziz University? 3.
What is the effect of the Internet-based instructional program on developing English major students’ critical thinking skills at Salman bin Abdulaziz University? The subjects of this study were purposefully chosen from the Department of English at Salman bin Abdulaziz University.
The subjects in this study were 98 male students enrolled in a writing course during the first semester of the academic year 2012/2013.
These subjects formed the total number of students in the third level, except the students who participated in the pilot study.
This study used the quasi-experimental design.
The subjects were randomly assigned into two groups: an experimental group was taught essay writing via the IBIP; the other group was taught in the ordinary method.
The researcher designed an Internet-based instructional program to achieve the purpose of the study.
The website of the program was provided with useful links and learning materials.
The same pretest and posttest was implemented for all groups.
The instruments of the study were validated using proper procedures. Means, standard deviation, and One-way ANOVA were used to analyze the data and compare the two groups.
The findings of the study revealed statistically significant differences at (α ≤ 0.05) between groups in both writing and critical thinking skills in favor of the experimental group.
In addition, the findings revealed that the writing sub-skills of the students in the experimental group were significantly improved in eight of the nine sub-skills talked in this study: thesis statement, relevance, coherence, cohesion, argumentativeness, quantity, unity, and wording.
The study did not show statistically significant differences regarding the grammaticality sub-skill.
In light of the findings, it is recommended that such Internet-based programs be incorporated in the teaching of writing and critical thinking.
The study also proposed a number of recommendations and suggestions for future research and applications.
