English Abstract
-In this study the association between thyroid hormones and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) with obesity in children in Al-Karak region was investigated.
A total of 54 male children aged 5-15 years were recruited in this study.
The children were subdivided into two groups; Group 1: Normal weight (n = 27) and Group 2: Obese (n = 27).
Anthropometric measurements including weight, height, waist circumferences were measured.
Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated.
Their blood was collected for the determination of fasting blood sugar (FBS), total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C), triglyceride(TG), thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3) and TSH levels.
The results of the obese group showed that BMI was positively and significantly associated with T3, TSH, FBS, TC, LDL-C and negatively and significantly with HDL-C.
T3 was positively and significantly associated with FBS and TG.
An increase in TSH was significantly associated with higher prevalence of elevated T3 and FBS in the obese children.
In conclusion, there are positive and significant relationships between childhood obesity with T3,TSH and lipid profile.
