Abstract EN

This study presents for the first time in Arab universities a collective corpus of Syriac Qur’an translations.

The author culled the analyzed texts from the Syriac polemical treaties aimed against Islam and Muslims in the 7th, 12th and 13th centuries.

The study brings into focus the works of three prominent Syriac personages in which they translated excerpts from the Qur’an.

These are: Timotheus 1 (7th century), alias Timothy the Patriarch, and his argumentation with the Caliph Mahdi; Jacob Bar-Salibi (12th century), alias Dionysius Bar-salibi, and his answer to the Muslims; and Abu al-Faraj ibn al-cIbri (13th century), alias Bar Hebraeus, and his Mandrat al-Aqdas (The Candelabrum of the Sanctuary).

These samples are tabulated along with the Arabic original and their back-translations into Arabic for an easier comparison.

The differences between the original text, the Qur’an, and the Syriac target texts are highlighted and evaluated.

What comes out is how these translators were deeply influenced by their Christian belief.
