Abstract EN

This work aims at the comparison between laparoscopic and open surgical varicocelectomy.

40 males with varicocele attended the surgery and andrology Clinics of Assiut university hospital, in the period from Jan.2000 till May 2001.

They were divided into 2 groups A and B.

Group A included 20 patients who were subjected to open inguinal varicocelectomy and group B included 20 patients Who were subjected to laparoscopic varicocelectomy.

Post operative follow up revealed improved sperm parameters and pain in both groups.

Recurrence of varicocele occurred in 2 patients only in the laparoscopic group B (10 %).

It is concluded that both approaches are safe and effective in treating varicocele.

The main advantage of the open surgical varicocelectomy is the lower recurrence rate while the advantage of the laparoscopic varicocelectomy is apparent in patients with bilateral varicocele as it obviates the needfor second incision.
