Laparoscopic treatment of duodenal ulcer

Elective surgery still remains the only treatment in case offailure of medical treatment or complicated peptic ulcer disease.

This study included 30 patients of duodenal ulcer admitted to department of surgery, Assiut & Cairo Universities in the periodfrom May 1998 to September 2001.

- 24 males & 6 females, the main complaint were dyspepsia in 25patients, vomiting in 12 patients, haematemesis in 7 cases and acute abdominal pain in 5 cases.

- 15 patients were subjected to posterior truncal and anterior highly selective vagotomies, 3 patients were subjected to high selective vagotomies alone, 7patients were subjected to truncal vagotomies and drainage & 5 cases were subjected to simple closure of perforated duodenal ulcer.

Laparoscopy made operations easier and convenient, also the results were excellent as regards the postoperative complications which were minimal and reduced hospital stay.
