Abstract EN

Machine simulation of human reading has been a subject of intensive research for almost three decades.

While most of this research has been concerned with character recognition, some work has been conducted towards the automatic recognition of Arabic characters.

The objectives of the paper are: to identify the major problems related to handwritten and printed Arabic character recognition; to examine different preprocessing techniques used with on-line and off-line strategies.

Furthermore, the study proposes two methods for the recognition of handwritten and printed Arabic characters.

The first is one involving an on-line structural approach for the recognition of handwritten characters entered from a graphic tablet.

The second is an off-line statistical approach for the recognition of printed characters entered from a scanner.
