Abstract EN

The articlc looks into the history of Qur’anic studies in Russia, in general, while concentrating on tracing the development of Qur’an translations into Russian in particular.

Taking an outside-in approach, the author assesses the current state of Qur’anic studies and distinguishes two main schools: the St.

Petersburg school and the Moscow school.

At the same time he affirms the historical role of the Kazan school, which places high emphasis on the theoretical and practical issues of Islam.

The article shows that, for the most part, modern Qur’anic researches arc still inspired by the pervasive traditions of the Russian school of Oriental studies.

At the sime time, the influence of classical Islamic books, their intepratations and translations are on the increase.

Non- Muslim researchers arc showing more interest in Muslim tradition and historical chronicles and are refraining, though not always, from questionable interpretations of the Qur’an.

In considering the existent Rsussian translations of the Qur’an, the author underlines some positive and negative aspects of the most commonly used translations of I.
