The transient and nonstationary responses of a nonlinear spring subjected to random earthquake excitations are studied.

Stationary, nonstationary, white noise, and filtered white noise models for ground motion are considered.

The method of nonstationary equivaient linearization in conjunction with the moments of the Fokker-Planck equation is used for the response analysis.

For a range of values of parameters, the nonstationary root-mean-square displacement and velocity responses of the nonlinear oscillator are calculated.

Monte-Carlo digital simula-tions are also performed and the root-mean-square responses are estimated.

The results are compared with those obtained by the linearization method and reasonable agreement is observed.
