Concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT)‎ for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC)‎

Forty patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma were treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy in Assiut University Hospital, from January 1997 to December 1999.

The study included 31 males and 9 females, their ages ranged from 23 to 55 years (mean, 40.8 years).

The tumor received a dose of50-70 Gy depending on the presence and size of the lymph nodes.

Treatment was delivered 5 days a week with a daily tumor dose of 1.8 Gy.

Chemotherapy consisted of cis-diamine dichloro-platinum (CDDP) and 5-flurouracil which was delivered simultaneously with radiotherapy in weeks one and six.

The overall survival and disease-free survival rates at 28 months were 60% and 57.5% respectively.

Complete responses were achieved in 75% of cases.

However two of those patients subsequently failed locally and seven developed distant metastases.

The acute toxicities of CCRT, which were evaluated according to UICC toxicity criteria, were reversible and tolerated by the patients.
