Abstract EN
Ninety cases of infantile intussusception, were selected as appropriate candidates for trials of non-operative reduction.
They were admitted to the pediatric emergency care unit and surgery department, Assiut university Hospitals from January 1998 to March 2001.
Sixty two patients were males and 28 patients were females.
Their ages were less than two year.
Twenty cases of neglected intussusception were excluded from this study and were submitted for urgent surgical interference.
All patients were subjected to proper clinical evaluation, plain abdominal radiograph and urgent abdominal ultrasound.
Our cases were divided into 3 groups, each included 30 cases.
First group patients were subjected to hydrostatic reduction using gastrographin enema, second group patients were subjected to pneumatic reduction, while, third group patients were subjected to reduction by saline enema under sonar.
Success rates were 56.5%, 60% and 76.6% in the Is', 2nd and3rd groups respectively.
There was one case of colonic perforation and no recorded mortalities.
Our study denote that non-operative reduction is recommended for infants with early and classic intussusceptions, while infants with neglected intussuscption should be subjected to primary surgical treatment.
