Dye-sensitized photooxygenation of maleic and fumaric acids gives products isolated and haracterized as dl- and weso-tartaric acids in the case of maleic and fumaric acids, re^ectively.
The participation of singlet oxygen as the active oxidizing species has also been confirmed.
Tentative mechanisms for the photooxygenation of maleic and fumaric acids by singlet oxygen have been proposed.
