The association between measures of association for categorical data : concepts, applicatons, and interpretations

As far as the statistical packages are concerned, the study used SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences).(University of Umm Alqura), and the concern is to investigate any association between the academic performance level of students and their specialization, whether they live with their families, and the educational level of their guardians.

The study showed that these measures, though different and have specific properties and do not carry quite same values, have something in In this study we study the association between different measures of association that can be used in the analysis of categorical data.

The objective is to review the concepts of these measures and to apply them to see if they give similar or different results and, consequently, if they lead to identical conclusions and interpretations.

The measures we study include: Goodman & Kruskal's Lambda, Goodman & Kruskal's Tau, uncertainty coefficient, Eta Coefficient, and Pearson's correlation coefficient.

The study is concerned with reviewing these measures and in showing the association between them in magnitude, significance and interpretations for the results given by them.

The data of the study are collected from a random sample of students at the University College of Makkah
