Abstract EN
This paper analyzes internal migration in the context of decentralization.
To do so the study looks at the patterns of internal migration in Sudan and examines the correlation between internal migration and some socio-economic variables.
The information available in the 2008 census revealed that about 10% of the total population changed their places of residence in their lifetime.
All but three states are sending states and the most receiving state is Khartoum State.
Internal migration is also found to be negatively correlated with poverty indicators and positively correlated with consumption expenditure per capita per month, however, the correlation between in- migration and youth literacy is uninformative.
The study recommends implementation of balanced development between states and creating job opportunities at state level, subsidizing poor states to formulate poverty reduction strategies and to conduct more specialized research on internal migration to fill the data gap.
