Efficacy of five Sudanese medicinal plant extracts against selected antibiotic resistant bacteria

The use of Medicinal plants as row material in the production of drug is still essential.

The Methanol, Chloroform and Aqueous extracts of five Sudanese Medicinal plants used in traditional medicine : Rndia nilotia (fruits) and Kigelia Africana (fruits), Monechma ciliatum(seeds) and of Azadirachta indica (leaves), Aristolochia barcteolata (leaves) were tested in vitro for their antibacterial activity against five isolated bacteria resistant to ten antibiotics.

Significant inhibition (90-96%) on Proteus mirabilis with the chloroform and methanol extracts of R.

nilotia.

Whereas, (91-95 %) on Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsialla pneumonia were observed with the three extracts of R.

nilotia.

The methanolic extract of K.

africana, on the other hand, showed a significant inhibition (93 %) of the growth of Esherichia coli.

The chloroform extract of A.

indica showed a high growth inhibition (78-87) on both P.

mirabilis and E.

coli.Other remaining extracts tested, showed variable growth inhibitory effects on the various bacterial isolates tested.

Pesudmonas aeruginosa was the least affected by the extracts used in this study.
