Abstract EN
Objectives The aim of this study was to assess and evaluate serum levels of cystatin C and microalbuminuria as new biomarkers in the early detection of renal damage in Sudanese hypertensive patients.
This Study was carried out in Khartoum hospital and Fath Elrahman Elbashir clinic during the period from 2010 to 2012.
Methods The study was performed on 175 patients as the study group, 88 healthy volunteers as a first control group and 44 patients known with kidney regression as a second control group.
The age for the control groups and the study group were matched.
Serum levels of cystatin C was measured by ELISA microplate reader (TC 96) and microalbuminuria was measured by Nycocard U-albumin reader II.
Results The results of hypertensive patients showed significant raising (p < 0.
01) in both levels of serum cystatin C and mean results of microalbuminuria when compared with first control group, however, the results of hypertensive patients showed significant low levels (p < 0.
01) of serum cystatin C and mean results of microalbuminuria compared to the second control group.
This result suggests early kidney damage in hypertensive patients.
Conclusion As a conclusion, this study showed that the serum level of cystatin C and microalbuminuria might probably be considered as sensitive markers for early screening of kidney disease in hypertensive patients.
