English Abstract
This study aimed at investigating the effect of summarizing and copying strategies on the reading comprehension and writing performance of Jordanian University students in English Language.
To achieve the aim of the study, the researcher used a quasi-experimental design.
The participants of the study consisted of (97) students at the University of Jordan registered in the communication skills course 100 during the second semester of the academic year 2011/2012.
The participants were divided into two experimental groups and a control group.
The first experimental group consisted of (34) students who were taught using the summarizing strategy and the second experimental group consisted of (33) students who were taught using the copying strategy, as for the control group it consisted of 30 students who were taught using the current way.
The instruments of the study were: a reading comprehension test, a writing performance test, also lee's (2010) criteria for evaluating writing was adopted.
The validity of the instruments was ensured by a panel of juries and for the reliability of the tests, the researcher used test and re-test procedures.
Using MANCOVA, the results of the study revealed a statistically significant difference at ( α=0.05) in improving reading comprehension between the experimental groups and the control group in favor of the experimental groups due to the summarizing and copying strategies.
The results of the study also revealed that there was a significant difference at (α=0.05) in improving writing performance between the experimental groups and the control group in favor of the experimental group due to the summarizing and copying strategies.
The experimental group which was taught using the summarizing strategy got the highest scores followed by the second experimental group which was taught using the copying strategy.
