English Abstract

The purpose of this study was to suggest a training program based on the academic and professional needs for English foreign language teachers who teach tenth grade at Amman public schools.

The population of the study included all English foreign language teachers who teach tenth grade at Amman public schools during the academic year 2011.

The population included (198) teachers who teach tenth grade as the Ministry of Education in Jordan confirmed through that period.

The sample of the study consisted of all English language teachers that belong to two directorates chosen randomly from the five directorates of Amman’s directorates of education.

They were the second and the fourth directorates that comprised (78) teachers.

The study attempted to answer the following questions: 1- What are the academic training needs of English foreign language teachers of tenth grade at Amman public schools as delineated by the questionnaire? 2- What are the professional training needs of English foreign language teachers of tenth grade in Amman public schools as delineated by the questionnaire? 3- What is the suggested training program that based on the academic and professional needs for English foreign language teachers? The researcher developed a questionnaire.

It included the needs of two main domains that are the academic with thirty three items that covered the sub-domains: lesson planning, lesson implementing, lesson evaluation, interaction and classroom management and teaching aids.

And the professional training needs domain which included fifteen items.

The total number of the items is forty eight.

The questionnaire was revised by fourteen specialists to verify its validity.

Also, Cronbach Alpha equation was applied to verify its reliability.

The results of the study were as follows: 1- Teachers have no needs of training in academic field in general, which recorded mean (3.86) and standard deviation (.628) Nevertheless, the sub- domain teaching aids showed that teachers are in need of training in this sub-domain that recorded mean (3.58 (and standard deviation (.850).

2- Teachers have needs of training in professional domain which recorded mean (3.28) and standard deviation (0.64) with moderate relativity significance.

In the light of the results of the two previous questions, the answer of the third question is: 3- Construct a suggested training program based on the teaching aids needs and professional needs for English foreign language teachers in the tenth level at public schools.

The program can be implemented within twenty four hours distributed on eight weeks; a session every week.

In light of these findings the researcher proposed recommendations to the Ministry of Education and to the designers’ of teachers training programs in order to develop English foreign language teachers academically and professionally through improving the training programs
