English Abstract

This study examines The Sirah ofAntar as an oral historical narrative, embodying an Islamic interpretati©n and treatment of some aspects ©f Islamic and pagan Arab history.

The Islamic vision ofhistory in particular and the Islamic worldview in general shape the narrator interpretation of the past.

He conceives ofhistory, the fulfillment of a divine plan, as a continuum.

The Sirah’s proposed version ofhistory aims to create a link between certain aspects of Islamic and Arab history.

It links the history of Abraham, an important prophet in Islamic history, the history of Autar, a famous pagan Arab poet and warrior, and the history of the Prophet ^hammad.

Abraham came to attack the idolaters of the Earth, and obviously so did the Prophet ^hammad.

Antar came to pave the way for the coming of the Prophet Muhammad.

A comparative study of the history ofAbraham in The Sirah and in The History of Al-Tabari, and of the history ofAntar in The Sirah and in Al-Asfahani's The Book of Songs demonstrates that the accounts of The Sirah have a historical basis, but that they are reworked in a way to suit the Islamic context in which The Sirah emerged.
