English Abstract

This paper reports the findings of study into the difficulties that young entrepreneurs in Morocco face.

The main objective was to describe problems encountered by young entrepreneurs during the start-up phase and the initial period after the creation of their enterprises.

Toward this end, structured interviews were conducted with a sample composed of twelve young entrepreneurs, three females and nine males, from the city of Marrakech.

A combination of quantitative and qualitative methods were employed to organize and interpret the data.

Conclusions drawn from the data were that many young entrepreneurs encountered numerous problems going through the administrative procedures required when applying for the Loan for Young Entrepreneurs, which required too much time and money.

In addition, many young entrepreneurs lacked managerial knowledge and experience.

Also, the external environment including banks, local communities, and Chambers of Commerce, were not very helpful.

Hence, it was hard for the young entrepreneurs to compete with established businesses who could profit from their contacts and financial means to obtain public works contracts.

Additionally, a lack of information about business opportunities constituted another hindrance to develop young entrepreneurs’ ventures.

Finally, young entrepreneurs suggested that the government should take measures to protect them, especially during their start-up period.

They also expressed a need for an association with a meeting place in order to facilitate better communication among young entrepreneurs.

Based on the results of this survey, recommendations about the possible ways to improve the program of financing of young entrepreneurs are proposed.
