English Abstract

Starting from the assumption that the media is significant in the process of policy making and diplomacy, I wanted to study the role of information and news coverage in influencing diplomatic relationships between specific countries.

As a case study, I analyzed the reaction of Moroccan diplomatic policy to the coverage of the French written press on the issue of “human rights” in Morocco in the early 1990s after the release of Notre ami le roi of Gilles Perrault, and how it influenced the Franco-Moroccan relationships.

In this study, I focused on a limited period of time that represents the Moroccan political system under the reign of King Hassan II in the early nineties.

The purpose of my project was to analyze and assess the influence of the news media on foreign relations.

I gathered data that consisted of books on Moroccan foreign relations and articles that highlighted the Franco-Moroccan crisis from Moroccan and French press .

I conducted interviews that included open-ended questions with experts on the issues of foreign relations, human rights, and journalism.

The qualitative method of research enabled the interviewees to provide extra-information that was of relevance to the research question.

I compared the findings of the different interviews and related it to the theoretical approach adopted in this study.

This allowed me to combine theory with practice, and to validate the hypothesis according to which there is an effective impact of media coverage on foreign relations.
