English Abstract

This project is concerned with the way mass tourism has influenced the attitudes of the local people in the old medina of Marrakech.

Residents’ behaviors towards tourists is one of the major problems which affect tourism in the city.

This study, based on fieldwork conducted in the medina of Marrakech, is motivated by the desire to understand the reasons behind this phenomenon, and eventually suggest solutions to it.

Tourism impacts on residents’ attitudes are felt on two levels: their relationship to tourists and their internal relationship.

The two levels are characterized by a lot of tension and misunderstandings.

The commercialization of the tourist-host relationship led to a deterioration of its social aspect.

Moreover, the way both parties perceive and approach each other also contributes to this deterioration.

Likewise, tourism is also partly responsible for the tension and friction which exists between residents working in the field.

Residents’ negative attitudes towards tourists is largely determined by the nature of tourist-host interaction.

A (re) education of both residents and tourists is necessary in order to change the terms of this interaction, and improve the tourist-resident relationship.
