English Abstract

Textbooks occupy a privileged position in Moroccan public primary schools.

Nonetheless, they are sexist.

Being aware that sexism has negative impacts on both males and females and being aware that textbooks play an important role in shaping children’s attitudes, I analysed the third grade textbook A1 Ouiraa to detect sexism in t it.

Using both the quantitative and the qualitative analysis, I compared, evaluated and analysed the number of male and female characters, their functions, activities, and character traits as depicted in A1 Ouiraa.

I found that males are represented as being essentially creative and resourceful, intellectual, religious, and dynamic pupils or fathers and breadwinners.

Their realm is the public sphere where they are offered a variety of jobs.

Females rarely appear in A1 Ouiraa.

and when they do, they are portrayed as being essentially weak, emotional, passive, intellectually and religiously immature mothers and housewives confined to the private sphere.

They are pupils, but they seem to be prepared for being housewives and mothers.

They are also working women, yet, they are relegated to tasks that reflect their traditional roles as nurturers.

To overcome sexism in classrooms, I suggested that teachers should encourage their pupils to be critical towards sexist messages.

Being aware that teachers are key elements in the process of education, I offered some suggestions to convince them that sexism is a problem worth overcoming.
