English Abstract

The literature about State and women’s movement relations in the Maghreb has been either State-centric or society-oriented.

This thesis links the two approaches by analyzing dialectical interactions between the State and the women’s movement in Algeria and Morocco from the decolonization period to the present time.

It is argued that nation-state building is a gendered and discursive process.

Accordingly, the thesis addresses the socio-economic and political contexts in which the State and the women’s movement have interacted.

Comparison of the two case studies suggests that both the State and the women’s movement have benefited from each other to assert their interests/identities in the public sphere.
