English Abstract

Pre-eclampsia is a disease characterized by elevation of blood pressure and proteinuria after the 20 weeks of gestation.

It is a common and a major complication in pregnancy causing significant morbidity and mortality.

Its etiology is still unknown and is considered as a disease of theories.

The present study focuses on some histological, histochemical and biochemical changes with oxidative stress accompanied by pregnancy complications.

Seventy pregnant women were selected to represent the samples, the women were classified into two groups, the first group (50 samples) represent pre-eclamptic women with age ranging between (17- 43) years, the second group (20 samples) represent normotensive women with age ranging between (16-40) years.

The placenta and serum were collected during the period from February to December 2010.

The results of the study showed that the Histological study of Preeclampsia (PE), the placental tissue expressed fibrosis in chorionic villi, hydropic degeneration, congestion blood vessels and damage in trophoblastic cells.

Also the enzymatic histochemistry studies of placental Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and 5-Nucleotidase (NTD) in placental tissues from PE show more dense activity of these enzymes and a significant increase (P<0.05) in the level of placental tissues ALP and NTD of PE pregnancy is shown in comparison with normotensive (NT) pregnancy.

A significant decrease (P<0.05) is seen in the level of serum Catalase (CAT) of PE pregnancy in comparison with NT pregnancy but significant increase (P<0.05) in placental tissues CAT of PE pregnancy when compared with NT pregnancy.

III A significant decrease (P<0.05) is observed in the level of serum and placental tissues Glutathione (GSH) of PE pregnancy is observed in comparison with NT pregnancy.

Also a significant elevation (P<0.05) in Malondialdehyde (MDA) in serum and placental tissues is observed in PE pregnancy compared with NT pregnancy.

A significant increase (P<0.05) in the level of serum Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) of PE pregnancy is observed but there is no significant difference (P<0.05) in the levels of ALP enzyme in serum of PE pregnancy in comparison with NT pregnancy.

There is a significant increase (P<0.05) in the levels of serum Urea and Creatinine of PE pregnancy in comparison with NT pregnancy.

Also a significant decrease (P<0.05) in the level of serum Total protein of PE pregnancy is observed but a significant increase (P<0.05) in the level of serum Cholesterol and Glucose of PE pregnancy in comparison with NT pregnancy.

In conclusion, the study shows relationship between the oxidative stress and biochemical with histological as well as histochemical results for the PE pregnancy and NT pregnancy.
