English Abstract

This thesis is in three chapters. Chapter one is in two parts, A and B. Part A: is a survey for the discovery of selenium, existence, availability, importance, Chemical structures and its poisoning effect.

Also it include all methods used to decompose organo selenium compounds followed by its selective separation in different matrices.

This also part describes all available method for the determination of selenium in general. Part B: It describes all theoretical as well as practical aspects for flow injection analysis, and determination of selenium using continuous flow injection analysis. Chapter two: Describes all chemical and equipments used for the research work. Chapter three: is in three parts, A, B and C Part A: Describes the whole steps in building a completely new mode of irradiation, absorption through cell and detection in dual manner. It is a micro photometric unit with necessary amplification or zero adjustment of background control using RC-filter to improve signal detection based on a digital readout system or a plot on a x-t potentiometric recorder of both. Part B: Describes the determination of selenium via the generation of iodine from the reaction of tetravalent selenium with potassium iodide in acidic medium.

Also the blue iodine –starch complex was determined On-line via its formation.

All physical and chemical parameters were studied.

Linearity of 99.95% for 1-5 mg.

ml-1 and LOD of 0.1 mg.

ml-1 with a repeatability of better than 2.7% was achieved.

Also with a Linearity of not less than 99.68% for 0.01-0.5 and 1-15 mg.

ml-1 with a LOD of 0.001 mg.

ml-1 at the iodine –starch complex with a repeatability of not greater Summary I than 1.1% (n=5).

Interferences of cations, anions and some organic compounds were studied.

It was found that mainly ions participate in oxidation or reduction of the released iodine will affect, Their main interferences were overcome through the use of ion-exchange columns. Comparison of the developed instrumentation for the detection and determination of released iodine or iodine –starch complex with available standard methods shows no significance difference in determination. Part C: The use of developed instrumentation was applied for the determination of selenium in different matrix mainly blood, Urine and well water.

Result compared quite well with available standard methods
