Due to the phenotypical heterogeneity of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and its subtypes, and due to the high rate of co-morbid psychopathology, it remains a challenge to treat OCD using medication effectively, behavioral therapy and cognitive therapy.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) arefirst-line pharmacotherapy treatments OCD, but up to 50 % of patients do not respond to initialtreatment of OCD.Therefore, treatment options for non-respondersinclude augmentation of antidepressantswith antipsychotics and other medications.
