English Abstract

In this research work, the mathematical framework of the inverse transform from the image coordinates to the geographic coordinates was developed and investigated.

This transform was utilized to estimate the unknown parameters of the satellite imaging system by using some of the data extracted from the raw images that produced by the imaging system. For autonomous assignment of the initial values of the imaging system parameter a sequence of determinations based on using some geometrical relationships between the angular separation of the satellite projection point (nadir points) and a sequence of uniformly distributed reference points were used to roughly estimate the imaging system parameters.

Also, an estimation procedure is given to assess the value of the satellite distance and, an equation for estimating the value of image scale parameter was derived and implemented. In order to improve the determination accuracy; two kinds of optimization methods were used.

The objective function was the sum of the errors between the predicted image coordinates (i.e., the coordinates determined by using the forward transform, projection coordinates) and the extracted coordinates of some reference points.

Through each optimization step the value of one of the imaging parameters is adjusted leads to minimize the overall error.

The optimization methods have been implemented as two layers.

The first layer was implemented by using exhaustive search method, while the second layer was implemented by using Hookes and Jeeves search method. The suggested system was implemented on two sets of Meteosat and Noaa images, this images must imply some of the Earths edge points to calculate the satellite distance parameter as accurate.

The existence of reference points very near to the center of the images will be very useful to more accurately assess the coordinates of the nadir point, and the results was encouraging (accuracy up to 1.2 pixel), and justified the suitability of the proposed system.
