Abstract EN
This survey was carried out in "Bani-Zeid" village, which lies 12 km Northeast to Assiut City-Upper Egypt.
The objectives were to determine the prevalence of CHD and its risk factors in this rural area among adult population aged 40 years and more.
The study was carried out from July 1994 till December 1997.
The numbers of houses were 1266 inhabited by 8889 subjects.
A cross section study was designed and * Presented in the IVth USA Eastern Mediterranean Regional Scientific Meeting.
Tunis-Tunisia, November 18-21, 1998 Systematic random sample with every other house was applied to cover 756 eligible persons.
Two questionnaires were constructed to collect data by personal interview about the family & house and personal data and a third questionnaire was used for clinical data and investigations.
Weight, height and B.P.
were measured Conventional ECG was preformed for each one.
Stress ECG was done for cases with clinical angina and normal ECG at rest and coded according to Minnesota, 1982.
Urine analysis for sugar was done for all samples and blood sugar curve was performed for glucosurea and high-risk subjects.
Lipid profile was done for both cases of CHD and matched control using Reflotron system.
The mean age was 58.1 + 11.4 years.
Of the 756persons 44.6% were males (60% were smokers) and 55.4% were females 65.3% of men were farmers and 86.4% of women were housewives.
Out of all persons 28.6% were overweight, 15.1% obesity, and 27.8%.
Hypertensive and 7.8 %.were diabetic.
The prevalence of CHD was 11.2%; 13.1% for men and 9.8% for women.
The significant risk factors for CHD revealed by Logistic Regression Analysis were: LDL, HDL, triglycerides, hypertension and smoking, while socioeconomic status, education, family history, cholesterol, obesity and age were insignificant.
We concluded that the prevalence rates of CHD as well as risk factors were higher in a rural area of Upper Egypt compared to other developing countries.
We recommend an early detection program for periodic examination of risk factors and CHD as well as health education program particularly for preventable and modifiable risk factors.
Conduction of similar study in an urban population and follow up research in the same village are also recommended
