English Abstract

Today’s business critical applications and customer requirements demand high-availability of company data.

DataBase Administrators (DBAs) are challenged to make the database systems available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and provide fast database response time.

Utilizing a standby server provides a high level of data protection and fast recovery of data if the primary server goes down for whatever reason, and can also be accessed as a read-only device for other purposes, such as report generation, thereby off loading the primary server.

To make the implement corporate data safe and secure is wise to backup and restore strategy and its implementation. This dissertation is concerned with the design and implementation of a standby server that can be brought online if the primary server fails.

The designed DataBase Administrator (DBA) makes backup of database, and checks whether the scheduling tasks are running normally. The proposed system is written using Visual Basic V.6 and SQL Server 2000.

The system is tested on a heterogeneous client/server module, where the clients run under Windows XP, Windows Millennium, and the servers run under Windows 2003
