English Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to design and implement a texture editing system that performs editing operations globally over an image using selfsimilarity technique with minimum user interaction.

The Euclidian distance measure is used to determine the degree of color similarity between the local neighborhoods of the selected pixel and the local neighborhoods of all image pixels.

According to the similarity measurements, the system will perform three editing operations to the specified texture.

The first operation is altering the color or brightness of the texture keeping the texture details unchanged, this operation is called texture painting.

The second one is either positioning the specified texture pixels to the target image using its corresponding color values, or synthesizing the specified texture into another texture in the target image which is called texture cloning.

The third operation is locally expands the texture regions using image interpolation methods like nearest neighbors, bilinear and bicubic which called texture scaling.

The first challenge faced the research is to perform these changes with minimum user interaction; the second challenge is speeding up the synthesis operation.

To achieve the second requirement the maximum allowed difference between the luminance of the synthesis and original blocks is thresholded and implemented to speed up the synthesis operation.

Some tests were performed to investigate the effect of involved system's parameters on the final results.

Obtained result was good in comparison with the results of previous works (i.e., Stephen, Cardle and Neil, 2003).
