English Abstract

This study used seismic crosshole technique, which is the most popular than other seismic methods for engineering purposes for it is accuracy and easy interpretation.

In Kerbala site, four profiles were used to evaluate the geotechnical properties of soil and determine weak zones, each profile has three boreholes: one for source and the two others for receivers.

The depths of boreholes were (12-15m).

In Baiji site, three profiles.

The depths of boreholes were (17-20m).

Seismic velocities (P and S Waves) are computed from previous data of two sites, where in Kerbala site soil, refracted wave reaches before direct wave due to high velocity contrast between soil and rock this lead to mistake in interpretation.

The velocity computation of Kerbala site soil are corrected by determine direct wave.

The elastic moduli and the geotechnical properties were computed.

From the ratio of seismic velocities (P to S wave), the relationships between Bulk modulus (K) and Shear modulus (μ) also Lame's constant (λ) and Shear modulus (μ) are derived.

Depending on these relationships between Bulk modulus (K) and Shear modulus (μ) and Lame's constant (λ) and Shear modulus (μ), many curves can be drawn, from which the graph of relation is divided into zones can be drawn, each zone represents the degree of competence of materials.

The variations of seismic velocities with depth were used to determine weak zones in addition to the use of elastic moduli and geotechnical properties ensure that.

The materials of Kerbala and Baiji sites are classified depending on classification of Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA (1997) and Uniform Building Code, UBC (1997).

Karbala site is affected by movements; this movement was coming from crashing of buildings material and from the tunnel construct.

This movement causes cracks in the building in addition to the formation of weak zones by The explosive of dynamite to remove material to build crushing building, which leads to cracks within surrounding rock and for weak zones by solution, where soil of Karbala site contains gypsum that led to dissolving in limestone bed.

The low velocity values in profile (1) of Karbala it caused by being close to crashing location.

The weak zones of profile (1) of Karbala extend to 10m.

The geotechnical properties and the elastic module in profile (1) of Karbala site are weak compared with other profiles.

This condition has led to differential settlement.

Soil of profiles around foundation is classified as soft rock (Sc) and for soil of profiles under foundation is classified as rock (SB).

For the Baiji site, the geotechnical properties and elastic module show that the materials are moderately competent materials but for profile BH 10 at depths (16-20m) are competent materials.

Site soil is classified as very dense
