English Abstract

The studied area is located in Diyala Governorate bounded by latitudes ( 34° 00ʹ - 34° 43ʹ N orth) and longitudes (44° 45ʹ - 45° 30ʹ East) where Late Miocene to recent rock units are cropping out.

In this area parts of the NW- SE trending thrusted anticlines of Hemrin South, NaoDuman, Naftkhana, Qumer, Pulkhana and Barda-Sur are exposed.

In all of these structures the northeastern limbs are thrusted over the southwestern limbs and these thrust sheets are separated by several lateral and oblique ramps along which lateral displacement are developed.

The lateral and oblique ramps are oriented along (ac) and hko acute about (a) orientation respectively.

The movement along the hko acute about (a) fracture system lies along the oblique ramps is related to the orientation of the maximum regional horizontal compressive stress (σ1) whereas the movement on the (ac) fracture is related to later younger (σ1) direction slightly shifted from the original direction.

These lateral and oblique ramps might be mistaken and considered as a major strike slip fault of Khanaqin or Sirwan by some workers.

The major thrusts are oriented on the Synthetic hol acute about (a) system.

Fractures of this system are not observed in the field, mostly because they are mainly developed in the unexposed inner arcs of the anticlines, hko acute about (a) and (ac) fractures developed vertical to beddings suggesting that they were developed in the very early stages of folding and the later movement on some of them resulted in their evolution into lateral and oblique ramps.

The presence of hol acute about (c ), hko acute about (b) and okl acute about (c) fracture systems suggests the presence of an earlier extension zone in the outer arcs of the major folds.

Consequently it is suggested that these major folds were formed by neutral surface mechanism in their earlier stages and grew by later flexural slip mechanism.
