Abstract EN
Although abdominal trauma continues to cause significant morbidity and mortality, the care of these patients has improved significantly over the past 30 years.
In order to evaluate the current status of abdominal trauma, we have designed a prospective study on 287 patients admitted to three university medical centres in Tehran over a period of one year (September 1996 to September 1997).
Among the total of 287 patients, 255, (88.8 %) were male and 32 were (12 %) female with the mean age (±SD) of 28.8 (±15.2).
231 (80.6 %) suffered from blunt and 56 (19.4 %) from penetrating abdominal trauma.
Traffic accidents accounted for approximately, 119 (41.4 %) of these injuries.
107(37%) underwent Iaparotomy, 21(20 %) of which were nontherapeutic.
The operative mortality rate was 15.9% (17 cases) and the Overall mortality for the 287 patients was 14.6 % (42 cases).
